Gardenhouse, the first project in the United States from Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, is set to launch sales this summer. Anticipated to transform the Beverly Hills streetscape, this iconic “village on the hill” features an exquisite collection of residences and gardens enveloped by a living art wall. The design embraces the notion that architecture can connect with landscape and nature to inspire us to live more fully and harmoniously. Interested homeowners may register now for priority access and pre-sale reservations, with sales commencing early Summer 2019 and completion slated for Fall 2019.
Ma Yansong is recognized as one of the most influential voices in a new generation of international architects and is widely appreciated for his “Shanshui City” design philosophy to create cities of the future which fulfill the spiritual and emotional needs of its inhabitants. As the founding partner of MAD Architects, Ma has amassed acclaim for futuristic works of architecture including Absolute Towers near Toronto, Clover House in Aichi, Japan, the Conrad Hotel in Beijing, the Harbin Opera House, and UNIC in Paris. His landmark design for the highly anticipated Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is currently under construction in Exposition Park in Los Angeles.
“In the context of our dense urban centers, my hope is for architecture to reconsider the relationship between humanity and nature, and re-establish the emotional connection between the two,” said Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal Partner, MAD Architects. “With Gardenhouse, we propose a new paradigm for the West Coast architectural vernacular amid the sprawling density of Los Angeles."
Gardenhouse garners significant inspiration from its location in Beverly Hills, a city known for its allure and sophistication, where pitched roofs peek above manicured hedges and stately homes lie within dramatic, unexpected gardens. Gardenhouse is a tribute to the elegance of Beverly Hills, reflecting its essence in a modern, contemporary form.
Reminiscent of the lush hillside that provides the iconic backdrop for Beverly Hills, the sculptural façade of Gardenhouse serves as the canvas for the largest living art wall in the country. Awash with native plants and succulents which transform with the seasons, the living wall provides a connection to nature and infuses the community with life and vibrancy.
Clad in iridescent material, the exterior of Gardenhouse piques the curiosity of what lies within. The private driveway and covered motor court create a discreet sense of arrival to the building. The lobby, an articulated space at once sheltered and open to the sky, surrounds the reflecting pool and leads to the private residential experience above. The contemporary residences encircle an open-air courtyard, where a lush canopy of trees and hidden gardens overlook the reflecting pool below. The homes are purposefully placed to create the feeling of an ascending, modern-day village where an unparalleled living environment awaits. Each residence provides the space and privacy of a free-standing custom home while offering the benefits of an intimate residential community. The interiors, envisioned by international architecture and design firm Rottet Studio, evokes the spirit of California living and residential modernism with gallery-like spaces, both intimate and grand.
“As nature is the principal element for Gardenhouse, it was important to create interiors that seamlessly join the outdoor spaces, allowing light to be captured in a way that feels expansive, bright, and connected to its surroundings,” said Richard Riveire, Principal of Rottet Studio. “The interior finishes pay tribute to the California heritage of woodworking and high-end design in a way that is intimate in feel and lavish in tone. Our all-encompassing approach was conceived to provide a beautiful backdrop for each individual residence, while still maintaining distinct character within.”
Featuring seamless transitions between the indoors and out, each unique residence showcases expansive, open-concept floor plans with towering window walls and private outdoor living spaces. Chef-caliber kitchens are equipped with Miele appliances and Italian cabinetry and master bathrooms feature Japanese onsen-style wet rooms with free-standing tubs and radiant heated floors. Each home features direct lift access to a private foyer from the lobby and subterranean parking garage. Gardenhouse offers three distinct residential collections which redefine the feeling of home:
Sky Villa Collection
Perched on the upper levels of Gardenhouse, the Sky Villas feature soaring ceiling heights, floor-to-ceiling windows, and custom-designed sculptural staircases connecting their lower and upper floors. These two-story, three-bedroom penthouses boast abundant natural light, exquisite gathering spaces, and expansive views across the city. The Sky Villas are beautifully appointed with spacious interior living spaces that open to generous outdoor living areas and private terraces. The exteriors, clad in a stunning architectural façade of aluminum composite panels, reinterpret the classical proportions of each Sky Villa in a contemporary aesthetic.
Garden Flats Collection
The Garden Flats are centered around the outdoor living experience, with a thoughtful balance between vast windows and gallery walls suitable for an extensive art collection. With up to 2,500 square feet of living space, these three-bedroom residences are configured generously on a single level with ample space for dining and entertaining. The interiors transition effortlessly onto private balconies and terraces which connect to the interior courtyard.
Row House Collection
An exclusive trio of residences on Charleville Boulevard, the Row House Collection features three-story floor plans and private three-car garages directly accessed from each residence’s private lift. Adding to the level of luxury are spacious private full-floor master suites, fireplaces, powder rooms, formal and informal living spaces and upper-level great rooms with chef’s kitchens and walk-in pantries. Showcasing a seamless indoor-outdoor design, the Row Houses provide a variety of outdoor living spaces, including terraces and balconies and landscaped front entries on Charleville Boulevard.
Along Wilshire Boulevard, the living wall lifts off the ground to reveal glass storefronts at the ground level. Residents will have access to a selection of curated retail offerings and will be within arm’s reach of the very best of Beverly Hills including highly-regarded restaurants, exceptional shopping and entertainment, as well as a leading school district.
“Gardenhouse presented a rare opportunity to create something completely unique for Beverly Hills. We sought out an organic, nature-inspired design that is the hallmark of MAD Architects,” said Ken Simpson, Vice President of Palisades, the developer of Gardenhouse. “The architecture of Gardenhouse evokes a sense of wonder and appeals to many of the human senses.”
Compass, a real estate technology company, is leading sales for the exclusive residences. Pricing starts at $3.7 million. For more information, visit www.gardenhousebh.com/.
